Update – 6 local governments in Sokoto states are affected by heavy metals poisoning which is possibly linked to mining activities. As of May 10, 2024, 455 cases are reported, along with 29 deaths. Patients commonly experience abdominal pain and swelling, vomiting, fever and weight loss. Since the incident, the most affected area is Isa LGA (77% of cases); other affected areas are Illela, Sabon Birni, Tambuwal, Gwadabawa, Dange Shuni. Age and gender of reported cases are 0-14 years, 78% of cases; females, 53% of cases; and males, 47% of cases.
This disease is being transmitted within the community.

Over 90% of the cases have been reported from the Siguiri health district in the Kankan region, which is the epicenter of the outbreak.
