The early days of operations in Portugal: a country watching with interest

Gulf Med Aviation Services’ Airbus H135 and H145 helicopters began operations in Portugal precisely two months ago and something interesting has been happening. Beyond the numbers of missions carried out, there is a dimension that strikes us: the way Portuguese citizens have been observing and sharing our presence.
There is nothing routine about a medical emergency mission. Each take-off carries hope, each landing can mean a life saved. Helicopters have always fascinated people, but when they serve human life, they become symbols of something greater.
This is what we have seen happening on Portuguese social media: spontaneous photographs of our helicopters on missions, videos captured by curious onlookers, comments from those who recognise the value of this vital service.
Since the beginning of July, posts have multiplied. From Macedo de Cavaleiros to the Algarve, through the Alentejo, the Portuguese have documented moments that, for us, represent much more than aerial operations – they are missions that save lives.
Seeing these images on social media reminds us daily why we do what we do. Each photograph shared by a citizen, each supportive comment, reinforces the commitment we have made to Portugal and to INEM – the National Institute of Medical Emergency.
Medical emergency helicopters are not just flying machines – they are symbols of hope, of speed in urgency, of technology in service of life. They represent the certainty that, when all seems lost, there are still those who fight for every life.
The Gulf Med Aviation Services teams feel this responsibility every day. When we take off, we carry the hopes of a family, the trust of a community.
Each social media post is like a silent conversation with the country. Citizens tell us: “We see you, we recognise your work, we know you’re there when we need you.” And we respond with each mission accomplished, with each safe landing.
This spontaneous connection between Gulf Med Aviation Services, a company in the Medilink International group, and the Portuguese is the greatest indicator that we are on the right path. More than helicopter operators, we are becoming part of the safety network that protects the country.
When we observe the genuine interest of citizens in our operations, we understand the dimension of the responsibility we have assumed. We are not just a company fulfilling a contract – we are an important part of a service that the country considers fundamental.
This connection with people reinforces our determination to raise the standards of excellence of SHEM. Our mission in Portugal is at its beginning, but we already know we have alongside us a country that values life, recognises work well done, and accompanies us through the watchful eyes of its citizens.
