Provision of Remote Site Medical Services

Background

We were contracted to provide medical services on a pipeline project in East Africa. We were responsible for all aspects of the remote site medical service, including:

  • Provision of all medical equipment, drugs and consumables
  • Provision of medical team
  • Provision of ground ambulances
  • Provision of medical management and 24/7 Topside Support services
  • Referral service to providers
  • Medical Evacuation and Medical Assistance Services

Challenges

  • We were given a very short timeline to set up the project;
  • The project consisted of multiple teams working concurrently. This required 5 ground ambulances, 7 sets of ALS medical equipment, drugs and consumables, and 7 medical teams working concurrently;
  • 5 of the units were mobile, moving location every 3 days;
  • The project worked across a border with very stringent cross border controls;
  • The project was in an area of very high security risk (Al Shabab active territory) and health risk (in addition to Malaria risk, and snake bite risk, there was an outbreak of cholera).

Solutions

  • Operational hubs were set up on both sides of the border. This was done so as to overcome the cross-border issues. Resources (ambulances, medical equipment etc) were mobilised from the relevant hubs according to where the work would be carried out on the day;
  • The high mobility of the project necessitated a very high level of organisation in
    terms of procedures and checklists in order to ensure no loss of equipment or other supplies;
  • Arrangements were made for a standby air ambulance service in order to ensure a quick response time to medevac.

Medilink took responsibility of the health risk management process and set up training programmes both for the workers on the project as well as CPD for all medical staff on the project on the management of the specific health issues related to the project.
